Fall 2022/Winter 2023 Writing Program

Activating the Voice(s) with Sokunthary Svay

What is the rhetorical situation and how does it apply in all manners and genres of writing? What considerations do we make in order to create our written “voice”?  As an accompaniment to this, we will look over a couple of examples of poems to be read aloud by willing participants to take in the features of the performative voice. What are the necessary elements and features that engage a reading, that which is the performance of the written voice?

with Princess Moon

All things must come to an end, but autumn never fails to remind us of the beauty of rebirth. From the transformation of trees, to the chill in the air, the changing of seasons rarely arrives empty handed. In this workshop, we will explore the lessons that autumn brings us when we take the time to slow down and reflect.

Memories, Music, and Identity: Curating Lifetime Playlists with Bradley DeMatteo

As a bridge between the past and the present, music provides a vital way to navigate and retell our life stories. In listening to a song, we often draw upon memories––whether sad, happy, nostalgic, traumatic––and situate our past and present selves in time by reflecting, directly remembering, or reimagining entirely. Particularly in diaspora communities, listening to and performing music offer versatile ways to transmit cultural history as well as draw out the complexities of transcultural identity building. In this workshop, we will discuss music in everyday life as an aural environment which holds the potential to traverse time and place, build community, and even establish a space for healing.

Poetry in Motion with Sanary Phen

An exploration of how poetry can be used as a tool for processing trauma and emotions. To be able to express and communicate to others how we feel is an important part of human development but what if we aren't exactly sure what it is we're feeling? This workshop will help put how we feel into words and help us connect with the humanity that exists within all of us.
